L’ ETHIOPIE
|
ETHIOPIA The Ethiopian believe they are the descendants of the child of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, initially judaized, then converted to Christianity in the 4th century. Christian art arrived to Ethiopia through Alexandria and Jerusalem, and the use of the images spread out not knowing the difficulties which shook the Byzantine world during the iconoclast period, thanx to the conquest of Egypt by Moslem Arabic in 642 that separated the Ethiopian world from the Mediterranean . An image does not have the same status in Ethiopian christianism as it does in the Byzantine world : it is not the object of a liturgical worship but one of a private devotion. It establishes a privileged relationship between the faithful and the character represented. In these paintings colors are bright, clothing vivid, and shapes are often geometricals. The various faces, in the same painting, are always similar. Only the "good ones" are fullfaced and clear skinned, while the "malicious ones" are in profile and have dark skin. << CRUCIFIXION (Private Collection) |

MOSES This icon represents Moses during the exodus: the Hebrews took advantage of Pharaon's failure to leave Egypt (where they were enslaved), cross the Red Sea and begin a long wander in the Sinai. > During this wander, Moses climbed alone the mountain of Sinaï. On the top, God appeared to him and gave him the Tables of the Law, which seal a divine alliance between God and the Jewish people (Exodus 19,10-15 and exodus 24) |
